FRS Cow Scanning is a popular service at this time of year. At only €3 per cow it is a low cost and extremely informative service. Cows can be scanned from 30 days post service and it is far easier to detect pregnancy the earlier a pregnant animal is scanned. Lameness in the dairy herd can amount to considerable economic costs in a lactation year. In the average Irish dairy herd 20 out of every 100 cows are affected by lameness each year. On average an affected cow will have 1.4 cases of lameness each year. Between direct and indirect costs associated with lameness in a cow the total cost that can be attributed to an affected cow can amount to €300.
In a 75 cow herd this can average a total cost per cow of €45 in a lactating year which in total terms amounts to a whopping €3375 income loss to a farmer for a year.
Regular Foot bathing and examination of hoofs can assist in reducing this cost. FRS Cahir stocks a wide range of hoof treatments and repair kits that can assist in the treating of lame cows. We have in store cow footbaths and liquid solution to put in the bath. We also stock a wide range of hoof shoes from the rubber nail on block to the very new stick on plastic shoe. Full range of knives and trimming instruments in store too.

Tipperary FRS is now operating a cattle weighing service along with condition scoring your animals.
Our operator will bring a digital scales on farm and place in your crush on which animals are weighed. All data is stored on a computer and returned to you by e mail along with projected weight gains or in the event of an animal having been weighed previously weight gained since last weighing and daily weight gain. All data can be used for ICBF purposes.
Animal weighing can be very beneficial to the farmer in determining on how animals are performing, best breed choice for a farm, best performing suckler dams, best grass and feed methods to use to obtain best weight gain.
Condition Scoring involves assessing the condition of an animal particularly in the case of female animals at mating and entering the winter season. To achieve best fertility results it is best to have breeding stock in prime condition as they being served. Similarly at calving down in the spring it is important to have female stock in the proper condition at calving.
Cattle weighing involves the weighing of stock on your farm at different stages in their life cycle to assess their performance. In the case of beef cattle they should ideally be weighed before their first winter again when they go to grass in Spring and again at the end of that year. Breeding heifers should be weighed prior to mating to ensure they are suitable to put in calf.
The benefits of Condition Scoring and Weighing are many:
